According to the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics, among people in state prisons, 40% met the criteria for having a drug use disorder and 21% met the criteria for having an alcohol use disorder in the 12 months prior to admission to prison. Among people in federal prison, 23% met the criteria for having a drug use disorder and 15% met the criteria for having an alcohol use disorder in the 12 months prior to admission to prison. Obviously, treatment for substance use should be a major concern. There are things that we can do to improve treatment outcomes and make success more likely.
