This week on Transpositive PDX, we are proud to welcome Sheryl Weikal, also known as The Leftist Lawyer—a trans trial attorney, author, and advocate for marginalized communities. Sheryl runs a “name-your-own-price” legal practice, representing people facing eviction, foreclosure, discrimination, and incarceration—often those most ignored by the legal system.

Sheryl is admitted to practice law in Illinois, multiple U.S. District Courts, and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and has been admitted pro hac vice in Massachusetts, Wisconsin, and California. A member of the National Association of Consumer Advocates, Sheryl also teaches continuing legal education (CLE) classes on Fair Housing and is known for combining legal expertise with radical compassion and justice-centered advocacy.

📚 Sheryl’s highly anticipated memoir, I Was an Abomination: A Story of Trans Survival in Conservative America, comes out next month. In it, she shares her powerful journey of growing up trans in a conservative, homeschooled family; surviving conversion therapy; fighting the state to become a lawyer; and ultimately discovering love, authenticity, and the strength to live as her true self. From crafting a doll of herself at age eight to show her parents who she was, to building a life of resistance and resilience, Sheryl’s story is a profound rebuttal to the dangerous myths pushed by public figures who deny the existence of trans children.

She is also the author of Circus Courts: How Racism and Greed Poisoned American Justice and What You Can Do About It, and her writing has appeared in Burn It Down, Chicago Magazine, Deadspin, Vox, Fangraphs, and more. She has written for the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education and received accolades including a 2019 SABR Award for baseball journalism and a 2023 Clio Reisman Award finalist nod.

Sheryl graduated summa cum laude and valedictorian from McDaniel College in 2009, and from the Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law in 2012.
