Washington County Board Votes to Close Clinics
On Tuesday, February 24, the Washington County Board of Commissioners votes unanimously to proceed with a plan to close the last two public health clinics in the county and move those services to non-governmental providers. Health and Human Services director Marni Kuyl says the goal of the plan is to expand primary care to uninsured, low-income patients. The plan has proven controversial however, both in content and process, with many members of the medical community as well as advocates for farm laborers and immigrants fighting against the closures. KBOO reported on the opposition to the plan back in September.
Tuesday's vote was preceded by a three-hour-long public hearing, the first one held on the plan since it was first proposed back in September of last year. KBOO's Sam Bouman was at the hearing and filed this report.
