Dmae welcomes Violinist-looper/composer Joe Kye into her home studio for a personal concert and conversation with this talented musician. Joe Kye releases his new album, Migrants, and kick off his international tour at Alberta Abbey in Portland on October 27th at 7pm.

Born in Korea and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Kye moved to Portland from Northern California. He talks about his family origins, his career, opening for Yo-Yo Ma and Bernie Sanders and about getting ready for an international tour.

Joining Kye for the album release performance will be BRAVO Youth Orchestra, a group comprised of young musicians from underserved Portland Public Schools, playing selections from his new record. Additionally, Kye will premiere his album, Migrants, a collaborative piece for music and dance with internationally-acclaimed dancer Ching Ching Wong, currently of the the NW Dance Project. The two will perform together around the world, with stops in Nepal, Los Angeles, Japan, San Francisco, China, Israel, South Korea, and NYC. Portland Electric Chamber Orchestra, an outfit of ARCO-PDX will be rounding out the bill with their eclectic, modern sound.
A multi-disciplinary exploration of identity, culture, and the spirit of human migration, the intention of Migrants is to include tales of immigration from Kye and Wong’s personal journeys. The performance event will explore many themes relevant to a rapidly globalizing world: the celebration of roots, cross-cultural interactions, and the need to recognize universal humanity across borders and artificial boundaries.
