In this extended conversation with artist and animator John Frame, we learn more about his design work for Charles Gounod's Faust, a co-production of Portland Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago. John talks about his fascination with the centuries-old characters of Doctor Faustus and Mephistopheles, as well as his love for the archetypal imagery which informs the hand-hewn masks, set pieces, and shadow animation he designed for the stage.
We also take a deep dive into John's formative years as a member of the L.A. art collective The Bastards, as well as his solo art exhibitions, including the Portland Art Museum's 2012 mounting of Three Fragments of a Lost Tale, when he last joined S.W. Conser on the airwaves.
