Drive-In and Bike-In Movies

To help you stay cool this summer, The Film Show brings you our classic Drive-In Theater radio tour.  Tune in and find out where to bring your roadster, your bike, or even your two legs to a screening under the stars.

We start by visiting Brian Francis at the 99W drive-in in Newberg, and ask him about the storied history and the uncertain future of the theater that his grandfather started over 60 years ago.  Then we'll call on Thomas Phillipson of the Northwest Film Center to learn about Top Down Rooftop Cinema as well as the Drive-In at Zidell Yards.

Also, we'll hear from experimental filmmaker Antero Alli, who's in Portland to introduce the premiere of his new mythopoetic feature Out of the Woods at the Clinton Street Theater.

Continuing tonight through August 27^th every Thursday evening, the Northwest Film Center and Hotel deLuxe continue their outdoor screening series Top Down Rooftop Cinema.  Screenings take place on the roof of Hotel deLuxe’s parking structure and include pre-show DJs and music.  Doors open at 7pm.  Tonight’s screening is British suspense film Sexy Beast  - a complete list of films and more info available at nwfilm.org.
 
Also continuing tonight throughout August and beyond, the Portland Parks Department presents their annual Movies in the Park.  These family friendly outdoor screenings take place in various parks throughout the city.  Screenings begin at dusk and pre-show music begins at 6:30.  This weekend’s fare includes Wreck-It Ralph, Labyrinth and the Never Ending Story.  Details at portlandoregon.gov/parks.
 
Yet another annual outdoor screening series, Flicks on the Bricks, kicks off tomorrow night and continues through August 21^st.  The predominantly family-friendly fare screens every Friday evening in Pioneer Courthouse Square, also with pre-show live music.  The series kicks off tomorrow, July 24^th, with Raiders of the Lost Ark.  More info at thesquarepdx.org.
 
Also kicking off tomorrow, July 24^th and running through August, the Northwest Film Center presents a Paul Thomas Anderson retrospective.  The series with feature both the director’s breadth of work and influence films by Akira Kurosawa, David Mamet, Francois Truffaut and others.  Most of the screenings begin at 7pm, details are available at nwfilm.org.
 
On Saturday July 25^th, the Portland Latino Gay Pride Festival presents El Canto Del Colibri at the Hollywood Theatre at 7pm.  The film focuses on Latino fathers whose LGBT children have come out to them.  The director will be in attendance for a post-screening panel with families featured in the film. The Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival’s monthly series at the Clinton Street Theater has two screenings coming up this month.  On July 29^th at 7pm, they’ll screen Jasad and the Queen of Contradictions, which follows the female Lebanese writer who founded Jasad, translation “The Body,” an erotic quarterly Arabic language magazine.  And on August 24^th at 7pm, they’ll screen Compensation, which presents two unique African American love stories between a deaf woman and a hearing man.  More info at cstpdx.com.
 
On July 31^st, the Pacific Northwest College of Arts presents Boundary Crossings 2015 at the Hollywood Theatre.  The event features new works produced during an intensive two-week animation institute, exploring animation that goes beyond a 2-D screen and installations in public spaces.  Show begins at 7pm.  Details are available at p-n-c-a-dot-edu and hollywood-theatre-dot-org.  And, you can check out our interview with institute director Rose Bond on last month’s The Film Show at our website, kboo.fm
 
On August 5^th, the Cinekink festival presents a double feature at Clinton Street Theater, in conjuction with Oregon Leather Pride.  The erotic film festival kicks off the evening with a Best of Cinekink 2015 screening at 7pm, featuring highlights of their recent festival, and continues with the feature Marriage 2.0 at 9pm, which follows a married couple exploring an open relationship.  More info at cstpdx.com.
 
The next night, August 6^th, the Clinton Street Theater will be home to the Druid Underground Film Festival, the shorts and found footage festival where you can quote “see aliens rip their own faces off, learn how to detect if your child worships Satan, perform a home exorcism and much, much more!.”  Show kicks off at 8pm, details at druidundergroundfilmfestival.org.
 
On August 11^th at 7pm, the Northwest Film Center will screen Brian Lindstrom’s latest documentary Mothering Inside, which follows mothering program The Family Preservation Project at the Coffee Creek womens’ prison.  The film will be paired with 2007’s Finding Normal, which looks at Central City Concern’s addiction recovery mentor program.  Brian Lindstrom will be in attendance for discussion.  More info at nwfilm.org.
 
On August 13^th, KBOO continues its monthly screening series at the Clinton Street Theater with a showing of The Yes Men Are Revolting at 7pm.  The documentary features more hijinks of the notorious political pranksters and comedians The Yes Men.
 
On August 20^th, the Portland Eco Film Festival continues at the Hollywood Theatre with a 7:30pm screening of Bikes vs. Cars.  The documentary looks at international efforts by cyclists and bike activists to advocate for better bike infrastructure and a departure from car-centric models.  More info at portlandecofilmfest.org.
 
On August 21^st, Northwest Documentary will present another installment of Homegrown Doc Fest, featuring original new works by students of the organization’s documentary filmmaking school.  Show starts at 7pm at the Clinton Street Theater, details at nwdocumentary.org.
 
Capping off August from the 27^th through the 31^st, the Northwest Film Center presents its other outdoor screening series: Drive In at Zidell Yards.  The drive-in fun at the SW Portland park beneath the Ross Island Bridge is open to car-viewers and non-drivers alike, with gates opening at 7pm each night and screenings starting at dusk.  The series opens with a screening of Clueless on the 27^th.  More info at nwfilm.org.
